Proportional Voting in British Columbia |
|
The BC Citizens' Assembly has recommended adoption of BC-STV, a voting method "designed to make every vote count" for a satisfactory representative, "and to reflect voters' support for candidates and parties as fairly as possible" in Legislative Assembly elections. On May 17, 2005, a majority of citizens of British Columbia voted to adopt this method, but it fell slightly short of the 60% requirement set by the legislature. It will reappear on the 2009 ballot for a second try. This site allows you to try BC-STV in a repeat of the 2005 general election, so you can see how it works.
If you want an introduction to BC-STV prior to voting, try this flash presentation, visit the Citizens' Assembly Alumni site, or read arguments for or against. Fair Voting BC is also in favor, and they have a site for the 2009 campaign.

Please relax: these are NOT the proposed riding boundaries. More realistic examples will be posted in early 2009.)
